My beloved Coco

Meet lovely lady Coco Chanel!
“Elegance in a garment is the freedom of movement”...
These were just some of the many wise words spoken by Coco. The lady was exceptional and besides introducing a whole new fashion era for women she also had a great sense of marketing. I mean, can you recall any other designer that managed to make his or her initials as iconic and world renowned as the double-C logo of Coco Chanel? Other symbols such as the lion’s head referring to her astrological sign: Leo and her favorite flower the camellia (in the form of corsages), stars, bows and ribbons also became true marks for all things Chanel.
She was smart enough to constantly flaunt her statement strings of large baroque pearls that were completed with the iconic “Chanel colored crystals” and years after came along the Maltese crosses and the nowadays ever so very wanted Chanel cuff bracelets. In addition there was also the Coco boater, her two-tone pumps and quilted bags… motifs, details and accessories defined her creative ingenuity and are still part of the fashion language maintained by Karl Lagerfeld and his team. Just like me: the Little Black Jacket... up to now I still have remained perfectly modern and an epitome of French design & couture.
Pearls SS 2013 reinterpreted by Karl...
This year Coco’s successor in fashion brightness –aka Mr Lagerfeld- and his ever so stylish friend Carine Roitfeld have declared me their shinning star and for this very occasion they decided to team up to create an iconic book and travelling expo all dedicated to me. More of that coming soon, but let me please fill you in with some more interesting fashion history on moi.
The Kennedy files…
So Chanel had her adepts and amongst them was Jackie Kennedy who perhaps was responsible for making me globally famous. Well, at least that is what everybody thought back then when Jackie accompanied her husband on 22 November 1963 in Dallas, the very unfortunate day John was shot. Even Carine Roitfeld recalls it as her very first memory of moi, seeing Jackie in her pink “Chanel” suit. But, as it turns out to be… the suit was not made at the Rue Cambon. Was it a replica? Well yes and no. Story is that Jackie had already spent a fortune on Chanel during her husband’s Presidential campaign and after receiving truckloads of criticism she just couldn’t afford to longer buy Chanel from Coco herself. So to avoid yet another social gaffe she had this dress shop in New York (called chez Ninon) recreate her favorite suit using fabric, trim and buttons from the one and only Chanel.
Quite a story, don’t you think? And whichever way, Jackie was responsible for making me legendary, I’m pretty sure Coco could’ve done that job too, but a little help from a stylish lady such as Jackie is always a blessing I guess…
“Dress sharply and they`ll remember the outfit; dress impeccably and they`ll remember the woman.”
I’ll be leaving you with yet another exquisite Chanel quote. One you should think about and keep in mind and furthermore la lady Kirilove wearing me like a lovely Parisienne... non?!
