I still remember the day when Ann-sophie johhason called my name as the winner of H&M award 2013. Until that time, I even could`t expect what would happen after.
Collaborating with H&M for a capsule collection is an unforgettable moment in my life. All the moments were so precious and I have learnt so many things that I never experienced before. Just a few days ago, on the 17th of October, the launching day has passed and the 1 year long journey with H&M is finished. I will miss everything I've experienced, at the same time I can feel quite nervous to start new things coming up. I am wondering what will be my next journey!
Through guest editoring, I also want to show another collaboration I did in Korea. For VFNO Korea, me and H&M selected Parpunk, the graphic designer to build up the special installation people will love. Parpunk is one of the most important artists who creates Viewzic culture (View+Music). He collaborated with underground hip hop dj's for parties and concerts. In the past ten years, he has been VJ'ing for broader audiences such as BIGBANG (the most popular idol group in korea), G-Dragon (from PSY's record label YG) and other popular musicians. His client list also includes brand like Nike, Adidas, Audi and Nissan. And surprise is he was my graphic teacher when I was 19 years old and in the Samsung academy. I remember how much i adored his advanced and futuristic work. This is special for both of us to meet each other as a designer after 7 years have passed.
Me and Parpunk shared so much images and idea sketches. He was so in love with the “Dear My Friend” mask and as this expressed my collection concept strongly, we decided to make the huge mask like a monster face in front of an H&M store entrance. It was so fun to imagine when the customer enters the entrance door it will look like the mask's mouth swallows people.
After we decided to make the 7m high mask I made a sketch super quickly in London.
That time I was in London to visit my friend's place, I remember that i made this sketch around 2:00 at night. I can see how sleepy I was from the messy drawing.
The 22nd of September, we had a meeting with H&M Korea to show the design in 3D model. Kwarg Eun Seo (viewzic member) worked overnight to draw them. I flew from Brussels to Korea for this project. It was a very short journey.
During the sharing of the idea, the 1st plan was too flat and looked like the door too much so we decided to make it with more round shapes and add more detail of studs, little flowers and layers of teeth as the original mask. We only had 5 days left so it was a dangerous challenge for all of us. I was really nervous that it was really going to happen.
